Program Note
Based on a middle length novel by AHN Jung-hyo, this experimental film describes a woman’s psychological and behavioral changes when she misunderstands a harmless letter from her bored husband. It could also be described as theatrical. Applying the hardedged conventions of theater, the film never allows the camera outside the 42.9-square meter stage in depicting the couple’s ennui. They are also 42 years old in the 9th year of marriage. Veracity is brought to bear on fundamentally unrealistic characters by the space they must function within. While indoor activities are relatively realistic, outdoor events cannot help but be unrealistic manily because of the limitations of the space. The number 42.9 has a double meaning in the film. The English title of Love in 42.9 is quite well matched. The Korean title is somewhat more romantic. “Theatrical” doesn’t necessarily mean un-cinematic or boring. On the contrary, cinematic tension is palpable throughout the running time, as is the director’s adoption of Lars von Trier’s <Dogville>. (JEON Chanil)
