Program Note
Based on the <Detective Galileo> series by the popular Japanese novelist Keigo Higashino, this is a mystery drama that ′faithfully but freely′ adapts the 3rd part in the series, <The Devotion of Suspect X>. The story revolves around 3 characters: a woman who unwittingly killed her husband, a math genius next door who sets up a perfect alibi for her out of his attraction toward her, and a detective who closely traces her, finding the alibi suspicious. Those who were fascinated by the nover that won the 134th Naoki Prize in 2006 might be disappointed by the absence Galileo, another protagonist. For the thrilling battles of intelligence between this genius physicist and the math whiz who is a high school teacher are one of the biggest fun of the novel. While excluding this character, the film brings the detective to the front, a supporting role in the original, succeeding to earn much bigger dramatic focus and engagement. The transformation of Ryu Seung-beom, who breaks away from his familiar comical image, and the ensemble acting of three main characters must be the reason. What also plays their due parts are the intricate plot which contains witty twists, and a more mature and solid directing after the director’s debut feature Princess Aurora. (JEON Chanil)
