Program Note
A remote Siberian village with the hopeless name ′Edge′. Here the exiled ′traitors of the Motherland′ fell trees, and an old steam locomotive carrying timber runs between the regional center and dense taiga. This is the place where Ignat is sent to maintain and repair this locomotive. Before the war he was an excellent locomotive driver. Now he is to start a new life in this godforsaken place. Locals are not pleased to see a stranger in their village. His torrid love affair with the local beauty Sofia only flares up tensions. This young girl is not Ignat′s only ′trophy′. He also gets the locomotive that until recently was driven by Sofia′s former boyfriend. Too many people don′t like his independence. So after Ignat had an accident resulting in the locomotive loss, it′s hard to find out who put it up. Survived by a miracle, Ignat is under threat of full disqualification if not prison for damaging the machine. The only way out is to cross the river and to find an old steam locomotive abandoned there before the war. (PAK Dosin)
