Program Note
1968. A well-known underground writer, another man who must observe and eliminate him, and that man’s lover, who approaches and spies on the writer ? they are the core of this romantic thriller. At first, Little Rose is forced to act upon her lover’s demands, but gradually comes to understand and love the writer. She begins to feel remorse about her double-life and decides to start a new life. But life never turns out the way we want it to. The script is based on the true story of prominent Polish writer and historian Pawel Jasienica, and puts heavy emphasis on its reenactment. The narrative is intriguing, but that’s not all. The fatal love triangle and spy action exposes the era’s sore spots ? the oppression and complete regulation of individual freedom by the government. The character of Little Rose, who is the Polish version of Mata Hari, and the woman who plays her role to the tee, Magdalena Boczarska, make an impassioned performance. She exudes a femme fatale, and won the Best Actress at the 35th Poland’s Polish Film Festival Gdynia. (JEON Chanil)
