Has the boundary between the normal and the abnormal become a blur in the Chinese society? The four events in Soap Opera do not even seem exceptional, only mundane. Morals and human relations are not important anymore. It seems like the world has become utterlyemotionless. The film is composed of four short stories. A middle school student Leyi kidnaps an elementary school kid in the neighborhood and demands money. A middle aged insomniac, Zhang has nerves that are edgy because of the noisy upstairs tenants. A famous cook Zhang Weidong, father of a proud son, has murdered his wife. Lao Deng fails in a suicide attempt. All the four stories are associated with death. There are no clear human relations in the acts of the characters. They are more or less coincidental. Director Wu Er-shan doesn′t provide any explanation. He doesn′t talk about morals or social problems. He only focuses on the irrational and inexplicable part of life. Life may be like the "dog dung" shown in the last scene. This extreme low-budget digital film may be mocking reality with its last scene. (Kim Ji-seok)
