Ever since the return of Hong Kong to China, Hong Kong people seem to ask questions like, "Am I really happy?" or "Will I be happy someday?" Their questions root from the uncertainty of their future. Recently, Hong Kong filmmakers have increasingly started to focus on such insecure feelings. The Cat of Hollywood imitates a fable that touches on the insecure psychology of Hong Kongers. Sean is a young construction worker building some stairs in an alley on Hollywood Road. He is not certain whether he should marry his girlfriend Yoyo. His boss Chan, while mean to his wife, is attracted to Ho, the owner of a laundry shop. One day, Chan is found dead on the stairs of an alley. Hollywood Road is filled with alluring pubs and it is home to many stray cats. Director Lam Chun-yue has made a significant choice of setting. The motive of Hollywood Road Cat Woman is a metaphor of insecurity. The strayed cats are another form of the Cat Woman. Lam however shows strong self-control using the motive in a reserved way. That is how The Cat of Hollywood creates a perfect harmony of reality and metaphor. (Kim Ji-seok)
