Program Note
Although differing from country to country, it seems that Asia manifests signs of schizophrenia due to its obsession with the West and modernity, losing its social, political, and cultural identity. This is especially true in case of Singapore. I Not Stupid is a film about education problems in Singapore society. Kok Pin, Boon Hock, and Terry are 12 year olds, who attend the same school. Although they have different backgrounds, the three boys agree that school is like a prison. But their parents provide bigger prisons with their constant nagging of “It’s all for your own good.” Perhaps Singapore itself has become a great prison, a jungle of endless competition and survival of the fittest. The only means of survival is memorizing math and English text books. Although director Jack Neo’s criticism of the Singapore society is right on, he does not seem to be interested in suggesting any solutions. But perhaps that is the right strategy to survive in such a society, for it is always better to adjust and be positive. (Kang So-won)
