Program Note
A multinational film shot in India, New York, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Pusan, with actors from Korea, China, and Japan. The director of the film--which was invited to the Venice International Film Festival--is Fruit Chan, who visited last year’s Pusan International Film Festival with his film, Hollywood, Hong Kong. The director, who had previously filmed the dark side of the city, especially that of Hong Kong and China, this time focuses on the public toilet--a place everyone uses, but no one really likes. Dong Dong, a boy from Beijing, was born in a public toilet. The film begins with Dong Dong’s monologue about his efforts in finding a medicine to heal his ailing grandmother. Soon young persons from Korea and Hong Kong get involved in the quest, and the film starts to manifest its own geography. The coupling device between the young men is the public toilet, which exists any where in the world. The film imagines the public toilet as a knot that symbolizes the circulation between men and nature. When there is trouble in this circulation, man falls pray to illness and the boys leave in search of a medicine. According to Fruit Chan, the world and man is sick. Indeed it is. Thus in the end, the circulation which connects all beings creates a resonance which invites the viewers to participate. (Kwon Yong-min)
