Program Note
Sam shows signs of mental illness, being obsessed with women’s underpants. He causes trouble by stealing the neighbors’ panties and touching the panties of passing women. Sam’s brother Mahesh and his wife Nayani stay at Sam’s mansion for a long time. Mahesh is planning to turn Sam’s mansion into a hotel. A psychiatrist suggests that if Sam gets married, his symptoms will disappear. However, if Sam gets married, the ownership of the mansion will go to Sam’s wife, so Mahesh doesn’t accept the doctor’s advice. Also, if Sam is registered as a mental patient, they can’t enter into a sales contract for the mansion. Therefore, Mahesh keeps covering up the problems just to maintain the status quo. His wife Nayani feels sympathy for Sam and tries to resolve the problem since Mahesh is indifferent to his brother’s mental condition and only interested in the property. Somaratne Dissanayake’s Underpants Thief is a Sri Lankan movie we wouldn’t normally encounter, and it provides us a fun way to identify the similarities and differences between it and India’s powerful film industry, Bollywood.
