Program Note
Shukla, a young man from a ruined Brahmin family, gets married according to his mother’s wishes. Shukla brags about Brahmin pride, but the reality is that he is a rickshaw driver living in a single room with his whole family. Shukla and his bride Lakshmi don’t have any space to consummate their marriage, and to top it all, Shukla’s sister comes back home because of a feud with her husband. Shukla tries to consummate by drawing a boundary with suitcases but it never works. When his mother and sister go out, Shukla takes his bride to a motel to make love, but a police raid spoils the mood. Can poor Shukla consummate successfully and start a happy life with his bride? The movie shows the reality of the lower classes in India and their daily issues, following the song “A poor love song” Shukla the rickshaw driver sings. (KANG Naeyoung)
