Program Note
An outstanding work that achieves a higher standard of Cambodian commercial cinema. Mony lives carelessly without a job. As his debt gets out of control, he has no other choice but to ask for help from his estranged brother. His brother, a drag queen dancer in a gay bar, helps him get a trivial job in the bar. As a homophobe, everything seems even worse to Mony. However a real threat looms when he accidentally witnesses a murder, which eventually leads him to run away from the city to the Cambodian-Thai border. Director Visal Sok’s feature debut, Gems on the Run (2014), pioneered the action/road-movie genre in Cambodia. His second feature, Poppy Goes to Hollywood Redux, is more fashionable and audience-friendly, with the contrast between rural and urban areas, a potentially commercial original soundtrack, and multi-dimensional characters.
