Human organ trafficking is modern cannibalism. This is a Taiwanese noir film mixed with ancient words and family drama, touching our hearts in its repeated twists that continue to the end. A middle-aged man, Ronin, and his Christian community run a pigeon racing business. Barbie, a pole dancer, is devastated when her boyfriend dies in a pigeon racing accident. Malacca, who traffics in organs, extracts Barbie’s dead boyfriend’s, becoming her lover in the process, while Detective Yang continues his long time hunt for Malacca. The characters are biting and being bitten, as pursuer and fugitive, as attacker and victim, or as lover and hater. The racing pigeons are a metaphor for the people stuck in a complex and heartless city. The storyline dramatically compares the crimes with humanistic choices made in the middle of the terrible crime of organ trafficking. The splendid images also stimulate the enjoyment of watching it. LEE Chi Yuarn
Writer and poet Lee Chi Yuarn hails from Taipei and earned a master’s degree in psychology from UCLA and also studied cinema at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Lee’s filmography includes Chocolate Rap (2006), Beautiful Crazy (2008), and FIPRESCI-winner Blowfish (2011).
