Program Note
In a remote train station in the middle of the night, Magloire runs away from police officers when they try to check his ID. Having nothing with him, he wanders around for a while until he is given some money by a total stranger. Then he is chased by a group of Kurtz’s gangs and taken as a hostage. He decides to join the gangs and help their robbery plan, which fails and jeopardizes everything. Magloire learns, in the interim, about the mysterious organization called “9 Fingers”, which controls the gangs. Wrapped in a mood of film noir from the very beginning, with a dark night, a train station and a runaway stranger, 9 Fingers’ unique characters, experimental images and mysterious stories lure the audience in, as if they were lost in a maze. Being the fifth feature by the French auteur F.J. Ossang, this film competed at the Locarno International Film Festival, and is an existentialist comedy that finds its balance between nihilism and optimism in an embarrassing and dangerous situation.
