Program Note
The film starts with the actor, Jean, talking with others on the shooting location, and it continues to show him with a long take for around four minutes. In the following long take scene, Jean says the independent films in the era of 35mm had to make every shot in one take. He also discusses the age of people when they start to prepare the encounter of death. For those who know the great actor Jean- Pierre Léaud, these two plan-séquences under the shadow of death may feel like a real interview. These two shots are also the implication of what would happen next. The film is overwhelmed with the life the great actor in his last years understood, the death he contemplates and the strong presence he shows as an actor. Every gesture and dialogue has meaning. The encounter with a lover who became a ghost talks about the value of love. Death cannot be told without the presence of ghosts or love. Lingering between reality and unreality, with the aura of a great actor, this poetic and witty piece is a unique ghost story by Suwa Nobuhiro. (RHEE Souewon)
