Program Note
In a reflection of Sarajevo in the century between 1914 and 2014, a group of exceptional European filmmakers were called upon to create each a short film?from their distinct points of view and informed by their own experiences?that encapsulates this spectacular city and its history. The final portrait, The Bridges of Sarajevo, includes work by 13 filmmakers, including native Aida Begi?, first time visitor, German filmmaker Ursula Meier, Italian filmmakers Marra and Leonardo Di Costanzo, CristiPuiu, Jean-Luc Goddard, Angela Schanelec and Vladimir Peri?i?. The goal was to organically connect the stories while honoring the personal style of each artist. From Schanelec and Peri?i?’s attempt to contextualize the trigger for World War I and the terrorism of the contemporary world, to Isild Le Besco’s somber remembrance of the devastation of the 1990s, each film and filmmaker speaks to each other as much as they contrast and yet remain in harmony. As a real symbol of hope in all its dimensions, The Bridges of Sarajevo is as close to the essence of truth that filmmaking can come.

Jean-Luc GODARD
Paris native Jean-Luc Godard is the preeminent filmmaker of the French Nouvelle Vague. He studied at the Sorbonne, but his career in film began in criticism writing for Cahiers du cinema. His vast filmography includes Breathless(1959), A Woman is a Woman(1961), Pierrot le Fou(1965), Alphaville(1965), Hail Mary(1983), In Praise of Love(1999), and Our Music(2004).
Aida BEGIC
Born in Sarajevo. After several shorts, Aïda Begić shot her first feature, Snow, which won the 2008 Critics’ Week Grand Prix at Cannes. In 2012, her film Djeca, Children of Sarajevo, received a Special Mention from the Un Certain Regard jury.
Leonardo Di COSTANZO
After his studies in Naples and Paris, Leonardo Di Constanzo shot several international award-winning documentaries. In 2012, he shot his first fiction film, The Interval, which won several awards at the Venice International Film Festival as well as the Best New Director award at the David di Donatello.
Kamen KALEV
After shooting over sixty advertising films and music videos, Kamen Kalev wrote and directed his first feature film, Eastern Plays, which marked Bulgaria’s return to the Cannes Film Festival and won numerous prizes in Tokyo, San Sebastian and Warsaw. In 2011, he shot his second feature The Island, which was selected for Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.
Ursula MEIER
Noted for her short films, Ursula Meier shot the television drama, Des Épaules Solides, for ARTE. Her first feature fiction, Home, starring Isabelle Huppert and Olivier Gourmet, received the César for the Best First Film in 2009. Next came L’enfant D’en Haut in 2012, a surprising film that won the Silver Bear award at the last Berlin Film Festival.
Vincenzo MARRA
Born in Naples, Vincenzo Marra began his career as a photojournalist. In 2001, his first feature film Sailing Home, earned him critical acclaim. His filmography includes Vento di Terra(2005), and The Trial Begins(2011).
Vladimir PERIŠIĆ
His first feature film, Ordinary People, a gripping tale of war and the banality of evil, was nominated in the Caméra d’or section at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. He belongs to a new generation of Serbian filmmakers noted in the 2000s for their modern style and audacious approach to Serbia’s recent history.
Sergei LOZNITSA
Sergei Loznitsa has shot numerous documentaries, including the critically acclaimed The Halt. His first feature film, My Joy, a dark odyssey in contemporary Russia, was selected in the 2010 Official Competition at Cannes. In 2012, his war film In The Fog won the FIPRESCI Award at Cannes. His documentary Maidan screened at Cannes this year.
Isild Le BESCO
Actress, notably for Benoit Jacquot with whom she has shot six films, Isild Le Besco started directing in 2003, Halfprice, an original work shot from the child characters’ perspective was unanimously hailed by the critics. Three years later, she shot Charly, followed by Bas-Fonds, which was selected at the Locarno Film Festival in 2010.
Cristi PUIU
His debut, Stuff and Dough(2001), was selected at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight where it won several awards. In 2004, he won the Berlinale Golden Bear for his short, Cigarettes and Coffee. Afterwards, Puiu began a six film project set near Bucharest which so far includes The Death Of Mr. Lazarescu(2005) and Aurora(2010).
Marc RECHA
After El Cielo Sube, his first feature film at the age of 21, Marc Recha achieved recognition for Tree of Cherries, and his reputation grew with Pau I El Seu Germa, presented in competition at Cannes in 2001. Les Mains Vides Ides was presented at the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 2004.
Angela SCHANELEC
Angela Schanelec, actress, screenwriter, producer and editor, is a leading figure of the «Berlin School», a movement of filmmakers which has injected a new dynamism into German cinema since the early 2000s. Her filmmaking is characterized by a sensitivity to situations and emotions, as her films Marseille(2004) and Afternoon(2006) attest.
Teresa VILLAVERDE
Born in Lisbon in 1966, Teresa Villaverde wrote and directed her first feature film The Major Age(1991) at the age of 24. In 1994, Two Brothers, My Sister was awarded at the Venice Film Festival. In 2013 she participated in the group project Venice 70: Future Reloaded, for the 70th anniversary of the Venice Film Festival.
