Program Note
An island floats on the river between Georgia and the autonomous republic Abkhazia. An old farmer repares to cultivate corn with his teenage granddaughter. One day, an injured soldier drifts onto the island. As the farmer helps the soldier hide, the island is filled with sexual and political impulses. Corn Island’s magnificent landscape includes the sky, river, island and fog. Coupled with the sound of water, wind and birds, this landscape reminds us of what nature is. For the first 20 minutes, nobody speaks; the old man arrives on the island, puts up wooden pillars, and catches fish. Looking at him working in silence, it seems as if we were in a New Stone Age. Such a landscape creates a bizarre cacophony with the soldiers stationed in the dangerous and noticeably artificial border area. The last scene expresses nature’s whims and power while also suggesting the meaninglessness of human life, which just follows the changing seasons. This excellent work was honored with the Grand Prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. (RHEE Soue-won)
