Program Note
Ivo and Maja, a married couple, live a calm and monotonous life in the suburbs of Zagreb. One day, their only son, Tomica, is brutally beaten by a gang of his teenagers peers. Instantly realizing the false concept of safety, Ivo and Maja reflect on their reality. This story of a couple losing their son in the most absurd way deals with the universal theme of loss of knowledge. At the beginning, the couple’s words and actions are so monotonous that they generate a strange tension. Such tension creates an ominous atmosphere in which the couple’s son becomes a dead body in a flash. When society doesn’t guarantee any justice, what is left behind is anger and the desire of revenge. The sound of breathing in the last shot expresses the parents’ frustration, quietly criticizing a society that can do nothing to deal with violence and injustice. This great film, which maintains its sense of tension without ever goes to extremes, demonstrates why Croatian cinema is so strong this year. (RHEE Soue-won)
