Program Note
When Korea was under severe economic difficulty, the situation in fishing villages was no better than in any other areas in the country. When his old fishing boat breaks down once again, Captain Cheolju decides to take illegal immigrants from China in his boat to earn a large sum of money. While evading the watchful eyes of the authorities to find a port to go through, the boat is drawn into an unexpected incident. Director Shim Sungbo wrote the scenario of Memories of Murder(2003) with its director Bong Joon Ho, and this debut film of Shim is based on the play of the same title staged by Theater Yeonwoo Company. The story observes how unexpected incidents led to reveal the dark side of humanity. Based on the true story in 2001, the film visualizes the pit of hell that can be created when human beings lose their reason. Amidst the stormy events blooms the love story of Dong-sik and Hong-mae. These two characters, played by Park Yoochun and Han Ye-ri, imbue warmth to this otherwise cruel and cold movie. (NAM Dong-chul)
