Program Note
China sends the great seal as a gift to acknowledge the foundation of Joseon, but the token is swallowed by a whale. The new government hope to retrieve the seal, but pirates and bandits begin their own search efforts. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter who locates the seal first as this film focuses on the comedy created by the diverse characters within the commotion. The pirates have a showdown between the cruel leader and the opposing female leader while the bandits undergo a fight between supporters of Joseon’s foundation and their opponents including Jang Sa-jeong. Leaving fellow pirates to join bandits due to seasickness, Cheol-bong indeed becomes a source of laughter, proving actor Yu Hae-jin’s talent for comedy. Directed by Lee Seokhoon, the film’s scenario was written by Cheon Seong-il, who also wrote for the television drama, The Slave Hunters. An outstanding comedy among the films released in the summer of 2014, this film has attracted over 8 million viewers so far.Adding humor to the historical drama format, the film foregoes strict historical investigation and making good use of its creative imagination.
