Program Note
This shocking film, which starts with a quote by Dante, follows the hellish circumstances of a Slovene family with a relentless crescendo. It is hard to imagine that, even during an economic crisis, there could exist such extreme misery. Nevertheless, it is true that modern capitalism generates the levels of despair that the main character goes through after losing his job. A cold and dark winter adds to the heartwrenching bitterness of the story as the man at a dead end struggles to survive after the horrible death of his wife. As its title suggests, the film is dominated by darkness. In particular, its excellent lighting work expresses its physical and psychological atmosphere throughout the film. The story deals with the inhumane and horrible violence of capitalism in such a brutal manner that it might make modern society look like a hell full of injustice, as the director said. This new work, which was directed by the Slovene veteran after, harshly criticizes the monstrousness of capitalism. (RHEE Soue-won)
