Program Note
Fourteen-year-old Maria is living with her family, in a fundamentalist Catholic community. Her life seems no different from anyone else’s except for her heart, which belongs only to Jesus. Like other holy children she has been told of since she was young, she wants to follow Jesus, become a saint and go to heaven. Accordingly, she focuses all her energy on going through the 14 stations, just like Jesus did on his path to Golgotha. Then one day, her life is shaken when she meets Christian. Stations of the Crossis an innovative film shot in 14 fixed-angle long takes, long takes, like a reference to the stations. And each sequence is titled by the passages stated in the Bible, from death sentence and crucifixion to the burial before his resurrection. However, the filmmaker maintains a critical perspective towards the overly strict nature of Catholicism. The miracle that Maria creates by embodying sacrifice and purity is an exquisite moment that recalls Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Ordet(1955). This is a magnificent film of sublime beauty and black humor.
