Program Note
After Gee, her Burmese housekeeper dies, 8-year-old Hom suddenly forgets her native Thai language and starts to speak in Burmese. Hom’s mother, Da, believes that Gee’s spirit has not left Hom, and decides to head out to Ranong to meet Gee’s family. There she meets a Burmese doctor, and with his help, she searches out Gee’s brother Pew. Then she finds out that Gee was a Muslim. Meanwhile Hom makes friends with an orphan boy, Thar Gyi, whose father was lost at sea. The boy deeply misses his father. Hom and Da continue their journey, meeting various Burmese people and forging a special bond with them. Da learns about the painful life of illegal immigrants, whom she had never cared for in the past. As she learns about their identity, she starts to question her own and realizes how her own fate is closely tied to that of the illegal immigrants. (KIM Ji-Seok)
