Program Note
This is a problematic film that calls to attention the certain energy that exists in Israeli films such as [Or], [Jellyfish], [Waltz with Bashir], which have suddenly rose to their rank during this decade. It lacks nothing as a text that presents a facet of Israel, which has almost turned into a military society. This human drama centers around two loner Russian soldiers who are caught smuggling arms and consequently arrested. The two characters do not want to lose their honor as soldiers even though they have committed a crime considered unforgivable in military society and want go through an honorable military trial. The military is not at all concerned with their wishes, and pushes to get them tried as civilians. This causes conflicts that send the story towards an unexpected direction. The dramatic events don’t always ring true to the non-Israelis, but the plot that runs toward an unforeseen ending and the relationship between the opposing characters are quite intriguing. More is required to describe this relationship than simply “friendship” or “homosexuality”. It is also noteworthy to watch the powerful directing of an old but new artist making a comeback after twenty years with his second feature film.
