This is a liberal and experimental debut film based on the famous short stories [Winesburg, Ohio] by Sherwood Anderson, a pioneer in American literature following Mark Twain and Ernest Hemingway. As the subheading of the translation work called [The Book of the Queer] suggests, the film is composed of episodes about queer people’s odd actions. The peculiarity and multi-layers of the characters and events remain true to the original, but the inside is completely different. The setting has changed from Winesburg to Chicago Heights, and much of the characters and events were either cut down or modified. Also, a middle-aged writer absent in the original was added and acts as a link between the different episodes. The mutually connected episodes that unfold in this character’s imagination are invariably our lives condensed. This film is indicative of a certain future of ‘Flash Forward’ in its black and white aesthetics and non-mainstream artistry. Hence the Canadian director’s next film is already much anticipated. Independent filmmaker Lee Sanghoon, who visited Pusan in 2006 as the producer of [Second Moon], participated as a producer and Cinematographer.
