Program Note
Urna, who plays traditional Mongolian music, sets out on a journey to keep a promise she made to her grandmother before she passed away. She is determined to revive her grandmother’s Horse Head fiddle (Morin Khuur: traditional Mongolian stringed instrument) which only has the head piece left after losing the body part during the Cultural Revolution. In order to revive the Horse Head fiddle, Urna must find the lyrics of ‘The Two Horses of Genghis Khan’ that were written on the head part of the fiddle. But Inner Mongolia, a minority race in an autonomous district to China, faced modernization and lost much of their culture through their harsh history. Eventually, Urna goes to a nomadic race in Outer Mongolia in search for the song. However, lost culture is not easy to find and Urna is ready to give up. Urna’s search for the forgotten lyrics is a criticism on China’s policies against Mongolia but also a beautiful record of Mongolian nomadic people’s traditional music. When the forgotten song is revived on screen with the picturesque scenery of Outer Mongolia, it is sure to leave a lasting impression on us. A true masterpiece too good to be missed. (Jay SON)
