Program Note
A sixth generation Chinese director’s dense melodrama. Director Wang Chao has created a pure melodrama about the bourgeoisie. Has the Chinese underground film scene finally compromised with the dominating market? No. Wang Chao’s melodrama is not a sugar-coated story, but a movie dealing with the love (or the concept of love) about adults. Doctor Li comes face-to-face with his wife when he is called to operate on a couple who were in a car accident. But before the wife can answer to her infidelity, she suffers from partial memory loss, and has gone back in memory to three years ago, a time before she was married, her current lover did not exist, and she was still in love with Li. Her husband is now stuck in an ironic situation where he must help her remember her feelings of betraying him and leaving him for another man. The film travels back and forth between the past and the present to reconstruct memory and emotion. Wang Chao successfully creates a love story without illusions that defies the idolization of romance, without a cynical or derogatory approach. His transformation is surprising, but not puzzling.
