Program Note
Soma, a young doctor from Tokyo keeps sighing when heading toward a remote rural village where he is assigned an internship. He is not wrong to feel that he is overqualified for the job. However Ino, an excellent old doctor in the village changes the way Soma thinks. He learns a lot from Ino about things he couldn’t in medical school. Ino knows everything from the clinical histories to the living condition of the people in the village. It is after a good while that Soma finds out Ino, who’s worshiped like God, has a ‘small’ secret. Noticed by [Wild Berries] and [Sway], Nishikawa Miwa offers in her new film [Dear Doctor] a drama full of humanism and tinted with a little mystery. By what is a qualification certified? How it is possible to distinguish what is true and what is false? ‘Qualifications’ are not proved by certificates, in situations such as an elderly mother conceals her disease worrying about becoming burdensome to her promising daughter, or a revered doctor struggles to become a greater master to match up to his overblown reputations. Here the director asks again about the problems of self-identity revolving around qualifications or certifications and those of the generalized criteria of truth. (KANG So-won)
