Program Note
This is a film about a director who falls in love with an actress he has discovered. However, it is not merely a story about love and jealousy, for it also describes many things about the film industry. Acclaimed director Aniket picks up Sreemati and turns her into a mega star. In the process, Aniket falls in love with Sreemati, and when his wife Deepti finds out, she plans her revenge by raising her son Aspratim into a director that surpasses her husband. Director Rituparno Ghosh expresses his compassion towards Aniket by portraying his smile as he watches alone a scene he filmed of Sreemaati. It creates the feeling of memories gone by. That’s why the conversation between Aniket and Aspratim in the first scene is so meaningful. Aniket says that a video can always be filmed again, thus expressing his wish to start his life over from the beginning. At the same time, Aniket’s wish and death symbolizes the movie and the fall of an era.
