Program Note
For decades, the accepted standard image of Africa has been one of impoverishment, bloody civil conflict, and the destination for foreign aid. That image is a Western media construct that is nearly the one the world recognizes-sometimes including Africa itself. According to sheer numbers and volume, Nollywood-Nigeria’s homegrown cinema scene and the country’s second largest employer-is the word’s biggest film industry, ahead of both Hollywood and Bollywood, averaging 1,400 films per year. By the early 1990s and after dictatorial rule, it had also become a popular favorite in Africa, appealing to broad audiences that appreciated recognizable images and places on the screen. In Peace Mission, Dorothee Wenner follows Peace Aniyam-Fiberesima, the founder and CEO of the African Academy of Motion Pictures, as he tours the industry’s celebrity hotspots, festivals, markets, and shooting locations witnessing the creation of the African media image by Africans.
