Program Note
In a small village where water is scarce, old man Zhake, who had been elected for the past thirty years as town minister, is defeated by a talented young woman. Instead, he is offered a librarian job. Though being indisposed first, he changes his mind after dreaming of master writers. Zhake’s everyday life becomes full of worthwhile duties, including tracking a book that was lent out 25 years ago and suggesting a Guinness world record competition for eating an entire sheep within one hour. This charming and truthful Kazakhstani flick is full of optimism about the world and humans. Though the villagers sound like carefree, easily excited naive folks, they are actually wise sages who know about life and dare to live it in their own understanding. Meet these Fellinian villagers in Kazakhstan. (KANG Sowon)
