Program Note
Man-soo, a subway train driver, happened to hit a woman who jumped into the railway a few days ago, and it puts him into under critical mental status. Meanwhile, Hanna, a German language lecturer, was going to a short trip with her lover this afternoon, but his wife found out everything and came to her place. Man-soo and Hanna got on the last train and reached at the last stop, just before DMZ, on this heavy snowy night. They have no other choice but to be together that night. Man-soo spends most of his life underground. Once he passes the dark tunnel, where only the train tracks are visible, the fluorescent lights of the subway station appear ahead. Soon, he has to disappear into the darkness again. That darkness is now etched with the shadow of death. Even though he wishes to run on the ground above him, he has to race back and forth between the dark tunnels and the shabby subway stations, bearing the burden of a terrible death. A woman approaches him. She is smart and pretty but leads an empty life. Can the two embrace each other? The pain of an impossible dream and the loneliness and guilt of their lives are lyrically conveyed in this film. (Huh Moon-yung)
