Program Note
[Wool 100%] is perhaps the most eccentric film debut this year that deals with encounters and affection in a fairytale world. The film lives up to the reputation created by the director`s short animations, crossing formats from animation and puppetry to live action, creating a unique world. There are no robots, no threats to the earth. Director Tominaga Mai approaches the conflict between two old women who collect abandoned things and the girl who intrudes on their lives, without physical violence but with a friendly attitude. The women`s ? Ume and Kame ? home is a haven for things that have lost their purpose. They are content with the jumble they pile up in the house. One day an intruder follows the red thread they got tangled up, to their house. They manage to accept her despite her strange behavior, which includes repeatedly knitting and undoing the work. They start telling the girl the story of their pasts, relating to the things they collected over the years. Memories of their mother, encounters with handsome men, and parting with them… As they tell the stories, they accept the past they had forgotten filling us with a mood of warm reflection.
