Program Note
Composer Alexander Hacke and Fatih Akin-who collaborated on Akin′s Head-On-travel the length and breadth of Istanbul in an attempt to document the diversity of modern Turkish music. From their home base of the Büyük Londra Oteli, the Grand Hotel de Londres, in the Beyoglu district of Istanbul, Hacke and Akin set out to discover the vibrancy of the Istanbul music scene, and expose the sounds of Turkey to western ears. The film features over a dozen bands and singers currently working in the city that are symbolic of the profusion of creativity in Istanbul. Among the artists featured in the film are Duman, a rock-punk band that combines western rock ′n′ roll with Turkish sounds; Baba Zula, and unconventional neo-psychedelic band; rap artists Ceza, Turkey′s answer to Public Enemy; Erkin Koray, a holdover from the 1960s who was covering The Rolling Stones when it wasn′t acceptable; octogenarian Oriental salon singer Müzeyyen Senar; the Elvis of Turkey Orhan Gencebay; b-boys Istanbul Style Breakers and many, many more. An eye-opening look at an under-explored element of Turkey.
