Program Note
The camera follows a woman called Ghada, born and raised in a refugee camp in Palestine, through her engagement, wedding ceremony, the birth of her child, and her journey to interview elderly Palestinian women about their experiences of Diaspora. Though living in Gaza, where conventional Islamic ideas on gender prevail, Ghada rejects a traditional-style marriage to carry out her own way of life. In the outbreak of the Second Intifada (Resistance), Ghada becomes conscious of her identity as a Palestinian and remembers that, in her childhood, her grandmother told her stories and sang songs of their homeland. She then starts to interview women of her grandmother′s generation and collect their stories of the Diaspora in 1948. Among those who Ghada meets is a 100-year-old woman named Haleema who, near the end of her life, had her home destroyed by Isreali troops. Ghada also meets Um Baseem, whose lifestyle still has traces of the old days in Palestine, which makes Ghada consider her own homeland, Beat Daras. The film revolves around Ghada′s struggle against conventional gender ideas and her journey to trace her roots as a Palestinian.
