Eliana lives in Jakarta after leaving her hometown. Her mother Bunda is trying to take her back home. Eliana, Eliana is about the conflicts between mother and daughter during a single night. In this low-budget digital adventure film, and perhaps a sort of road movie, the nightlife and scenery of Jakarta is as important as the two main female characters. To young Eliana, Jakarta is a place where dreams and ambitions are fulfilled. But to Bunda, Jakarta is a haven of corruption and decay. The Jakarta of this film is both treacherous and glamorous at the same time, and reflects the opposing views that the two women have on the city. Riri Riza, the producer and director of Eliana, Eliana, is a member of I SINEMA, a group made up of thirteen directors whose aim is to make a new form of Indonesian cinema. This film looks into those who are living unstable lives in Indonesia, and their precarious living conditions. The future is full of uncertainties for Eliana and her mother Bunda. The present and future that is captured by a ceaselessly shaking camera gives us a feeling of uneasiness, long after the film is over. (Kim Young-jin)
