Program Note
Border Line is a film by Korean-Japanese director Lee Sang-il, a graduate from Japan’s Moving Image Academy. His previous film, Blue Chong, was about a third generation Korean-Japanese attending a North Korean sponsored school. Border Line does not concern itself with nationality or identity issues, rather, the film focuses on the relationship between a child and his parents. The main characters are: a high school student named Shuji who is pursued by the police for murder, Daisuke, a man in his 40s, pursued by the Yakuza; a housewife, Aikawa, who realizes that her entire world is falling apart; and a high school student Haruka, who secretly lives alone. All the characters have scars in their hearts. The film portrays broken families while retaining a sense of warmth. Shuji, who killed a man in order to escape from his father, heads to Hokkaido. While on the run meets Daisuke, who tells Shuji about his daughter, Haruka. Daisuke teaches Shuji how to ride a bike, and Shuji feels an immense closeness to the man. Shuji then heads for the beautiful city of Hakodate, Hokkaido, holding a kite which Haruka had given to Daisuke and which Daisuke in turn gave to him. When Shuji reaches the address Daisuke gave him, he finds that Haruka no longer lives there. However, at the seashore, a girl approaches Shuji...(Nam Dong-chul)
