Program Note
The big city of Hong Kong is a splendid place, but a desert to the young, During the course of one day, Meme has many experiences and encounters people to talk to, but receives no consolation for her loneliness. On the contrary, she sees how desperately dreary her surroundings are. Only the moonlight can comfort her, reminding her of her mother′s bosom. Director Chag Wai-Hung draws Hong Kong like a desert around Meme and carefully examines the lives of the people there. Family relations gradually break into pieces, Eastern and Western cultures clash, and love is dominated by materialism. Broken off form older generations, the alienated young in Hong Kong suffer not because of other people′s problems, but because of their own. Uneventful days are spent deep in solitude and alienation. In this film, the director takes a heartbroken view of those for whom communications have broken off. Renowned film critic and screenwriter Chang Wai-Hugn has kept his interests in independent films while writing popular scripts like Police Story II, After the Crescent is his debut film, supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
