Program Note
What kind of life have our parents been sharing? The film starts when the director meets his father on the street one day. Father and son seem to be unfamiliar, meeting for the first time in a public space. The director films his parents who are rather indifferent, and bring them to the public sphere. Maybe that’s why the interviews of the parents and the intersectional puppet-show scenes seem quite natural. The film begins with a question. The son asks his parents what they think of him, then what the Father thinks of the Mother, and then what the Mother thinks of the Father. And so he joins their daily life, with his camera in between. Answers are revealed along with the father’s garden and mother’s household chores, as a fathomless gap reveals itself. This is a personal documentary that is not personal at all, making us reflect on what is a ‘family’ and what is a ‘man and wife’. (HONG Hyosook)
