Program Note
There is a traditional butcher shop, where a family does it all, from the slaughter to sales. It is the Kitade Butcher Shop in Osaka, which is famous for providing great meat for over 100 years. As their slaughterhouse is demolished, their century-old family business reaches a crisis. Tale of a Butcher Shop begins with the family’s last slaughter. The entire process of killing the cow, peeling off the leather, and cleaning the intestines is revealed without filtering, but the family’s attitude toward the cow is that of respect rather than cruelty. Such an attitude is perhaps the driving force behind their victory over social prejudices that have suppressed them. The prejudice that touching meat is debased work is not as strong today as it once was and so the world based on the logic of capitalism quietly looks on without judgement. (CHO Young-jung)
