Program Note
A camera set up in a small Palestinian village to record a child’s growth inadvertently records a squad of Israeli soldiers setting up a fence, a border. Not only are the families and friends separated by the random barrier, but the land the people cultivate is divided, too. The long dispute between the soldiers and those who would see the fence removed is clearly recorded by five broken cameras. <5 Broken Cameras> is a shining example of the power of documentary. Critical moments shot in the middle of long struggles bring breathtaking tension, however the real drama of the film lies in the surprising growth of the child, intermittently revealed as the conflicts intensify between the Israeli troops and Palestinian villagers. His growth shows us how long the struggle drags on and at the same time lets us grasp the significance of them. Eventually the film becomes, for the son, a chronicle of resistance, rather than of his growth, to bequeath to him the land on which he will raise his son. (CHO Young-jung)
