Program Note
The Nicaraguan revolution is the subject of <Magic Words>, a exemplar of a modern Latin American documentary. Works produced in the land of Che Guevara are still reminiscent of “la revolucion,” which once permeated the scene. This film is no exception, and includes the same revolutionary themes, documenting the Sandinistas?the driving force behind the success of Nicaraguan Revolution?and the path they have taken since then and up to the 1990s. But a contemplative tack is taken when the filmmaker asks about the true meaning of revolution. In today’s capitalist society, people feel removed from issues regarding freedom; they seem to belong to distant past. <Magic Words> provides the opportunity to re-examine the contemporary life we live in by looking at the past through eyes different from our own. Despite the seriousness of the themes, this film engrosses viewers with its lyrical images based on a rich collection of footage. The final sequence is decorated with the most beautiful moments of the revolution and it will continue to linger within. (RHEE, Soue-won)
