Program Note
Based on a bestselling children’s book, <The Cat that Lived a Million Times> has a title that says all that needs to be said about the story. The cat’s deaths following great wealth, fame and all possible adventures are lamented each time, but the cat is never truly happy. After a million deaths, the cat finally finds true love and realizes the value of life and the real worth of death. <The Cat that Lived a Million Times> consists of the interviews with mothers that grew up reading this story and are now reading it to their children as well as the dying writer’s own recollections. Women try to heal painful wounds through this story and reconcile with the mothers they could not understand; the old writer keeps living as she always has rather than quietly accepting her expected death. The film tells us the small moments?reading a book to your children, enjoying a cup of tea?are the moments of value in life that are realized after a million deaths. (CHO Young-jung)
