Program Note
2010 AND BIFF Supporters Fund A documentary about an escape for people that have fallen under the brand of? thief’. A minority group ghettoized during British colonial rule is still trapped within an independent India; all but forgotten in a world that had changed, still making a living by stealing. Now, society is in flux, but a rigid prejudice still treats them as thieves. They are persecuted by police and beaten for no reason. To escape discrimination and a history of thievery, they chose theater. Through drama they release their pent-up anger and give voice to their stories of injustice. But what they gain from it is communication and reconciliation with a world severed from them. Please Don’t Beat Me, Sir! follows the efforts of young men who try to live a new life through the theater. It communicates with the past by looking back to the village to ascertain the reason for the discrimination, which dominates at the moment. In capturing that moment, it reconciles with the present for a better future. (CHO Young-jung)
