Program Note
[Karla’s Arrival] is a controversial film about a Nicaraguan woman raising her baby under extreme circumstances and her love for another woman. The film made waves on the Central and South American festival circuits this year. Sujeylin is one of a group of kids living in a small public park in Managua. She sniffs glue with her friends and her boyfriend is a drug dealer. When she has a daughter named Karla, she realizes she needs a safe place for the baby to live. Initially she goes to the country house where her mother and sisters live but she returns to the streets two months later. The story begins three months before Karla′s birth and ends around her first birthday and is told from an observer’s point of view. Raising a newborn baby on the street and the daily lives of the street youth is both shocking and almost unimaginable and the camera illustrates both with an unflinching gaze. (RHEE, Soue-won)
