Program Note
2007 ACF Script Development Fund Choi arrives in Jharkot, Nepal. In his arms, he has an urn that contains ashes of a Nepalese factory worker Dorje, who was killed in an accident. The bereaved family awaits the arrival of the urn. Finding it more difficult than he thought, Choi decides to stay with the family. Every time the wind blows, prayer wheels around the town chant desolate and lonesome hymns with a rattling noise. It feels like the end of the world and there is nobody to talk with. Staring at Dorje’s wife or a snowfield on the high land, Choi desires peace of mind, but the wind only shakes the town without an answer. Director Jeon Soo-il casts every character except Choi (performed by Choi Min-sik) with local Nepalese. Through his sincere approach, Himalaya, Where the Wind Dwells seems almost like an ethnic documentary and it makes this distant land more unfamiliar. (LEE Sang-yong)
