Program Note
Day and Night is director Hong Sangsoo’s eighth film. Though his films appear to have similar storylines, there is a delicate difference in each of them making it the director’s unique trademark. This time, the story takes place in the back streets of ‘Paris’, the cafe and the art museum. Artist Kim Sung-nam flees to Paris when problems arise because of smoking marijuana. He accidentally runs into his ex-girlfriend but he is more attracted to the young art student, Yoo-jung. He persistently begins to tempt Yoo-jung. But just when their relationship is about to progress, he gets a call from his wife in Seoul. She is pregnant. He hurriedly returns to Seoul. Day and Night is yet another film showing repetition and variations of similar themes and at the same time imitating Paris, the city of art. The film imitates Courbet and Beethoven while going back and forth between deceit and dreams. Life follows art and art portrays the moments that hold life. This imitation of imitating the mixture of life and art continues on in director Hong Sangsoo’s film adventure. (LEE Sang-yong)
