Program Note
Six years after his debut film, Director Ahmad wants to make a satirical comedy. He decides to go into exile in the West after failing to fulfill his ambition. However, just before leaving, his friend asks him to audition actors for a national theater that is expected to be built. A national theater in Palestine? The cynical Ahmad knows that it is impossible, but cannot turn down the offer. Thus he sets out on a journey with a journalist and a cameraman for the auditions. Waiting is a road movie, made around the refugee camps in Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. The film is mostly filled with auditions of the refugees. However, such auditions reflect the fate of the Palestinian refugees. Ahmad gave a theme to the auditions: waiting, which is only too easy for the Palestinians. The long journey slowly begins to tire the three out. Waiting is the fate for every one of them. Director Rashid Masharwi was born in a refugee camp in Gaza. The film was made in the same camp, giving it a documentary effect. The fate of the four million Palestinians who do not have the control of their own lives is portrayed in the film. It is no longer easy to tell them, "Waiting will fulfill your hope someday." (Kang So-won)
