Program Note
A film that shows how an aimless war destroys individuals′ lives, portrays the life of a woman named Gilaneh. In the first half, the film follows the life-threatening journey of a mother and a daughter to Tehran in search of their husband and father who escaped from the army in the middle of the Iran-Iraq war. In the second half, when 15 years have passed, the war is over but the US is just about to attack Baghdad. The aged Gilaneh struggles to take care of her son who was fatally injured from the chemical warfare. Her family′s lives are even more hopeless and devastating than 15 years ago. The daughter has lost touch with the family and Gilaneh′s constant sacrifices for her sickened son in hopes that he can get married and make a family are too heartbreaking to watch. Turning off the TV which relentlessly reports the war and singing and dancing in an overly buoyant mode as if to put a spell on others, she refuses the war with all her body and soul. The two directors persistently depict Gilaneh′s pain throughout the many years instead of making direct comments on the wars in order to remind us how tragic and devastating wars are. (Michelle Sohn)
