Hye-Jin starts working as a zoo volunteer in the beginning of the winter. While there, she realizes the precarious condition of the animals. Young-Jun, a veterinarian/wild life animal rescuer tries his best to preserve the lives of the animals. But the animals′ habitats are exposed to various dangers and the zoo is only capable of exhibition and breeding. It is incapable of preservation. Farewell is a film not only about the reality in which these animals live, but also a film that raises issues regarding the treatment of animals in Korea. By alternating the activities of these two people, the film argues that for protection of endangered animals, a zoo is far from sufficient - what is needed is an environment in which these animals can roam freely. The cries of the animals trapped inside cages remind us of the misdeeds we are committing. This documentary, in a sense, is a eulogy to the dying animals. The director bids farewell to Korea, where there is little concern for ecology. (Kim Seong-Uk)
