Program Note
Kim Ki-Duk has become, along with Jang Sun-Woo, one of the most controversial filmmakers in Korea. In his new film, Address Unknown, set during the Park Jung-Hee regime of the 1970s, his characters sway between the darkness of their circumstances and their adoration of America. By setting a love/hate relationship of Korea and the United States at the forefront of the film, the film reveals that old wounds between the two nations are yet to be healed. Mixed-race child ′Chang-Guk′leads his life stuck between his mother, who endlessly sends letters to the States, and her lover, ′Dog Eye′ Between them lies a deep river of mistrust and violence. Eun-Ok, a one-eyed girl, sways between the American G.I. who healed her eyes and the effeminate Ji-Heum who falls for her. The history of colonial and post-colonial Korea does not simply end as a trauma, but is engraved in the body. (Joo You-Shin)
